Students Living Outside of Portland

“Our civilization has made us, with very few exceptions, wholly utilitarian,  intellectualistic, and we offer even our children the results of what we have ‘thought out’ with our brains.  But we ought not to give them what adult life has so thought out but what our maturer life feels and perceives.”   Rudolf Steiner : Ilkley August 11, 1923

External Teacher Training Certificates

The comprehensive certificates are a life changing experience for students. The External Certificates come as close to that as is possible, but students benefit from being able to study with others in a Waldorf or Anthroposophical community.   For further information, please see our FAQs.  These External Certificates are not available to those living within an hour’s drive of Portland.

External Waldorf Grades Teaching Certificate Certificate

This four year Waldorf Grade School Teacher Training Course aims to give student teachers as thorough a training as possible.  Students will come to Portland for a two week Intensive in July each year.  As this is a very short time the preparation for this Intensive will be spread over the previous school year.  It will include Independent Study of three books by Rudolf Steiner, [which will have its own Art Work], other Art Work to complete a portfolio, and the preparation of a Main Lesson Book.  The Course is aimed at both Class Teachers and Subject Teachers and will attempt to bring all students to an intensity of understanding the Human Being through self-realization as well as developing a thorough understanding of Anthroposophy, Waldorf Pedagogy and Artistic Work.  This will provide challenges and catharsis in self-realization especially during the Foundation Year.  Separate lessons for the development of subject teaching will be

contained in the second, third and fourth years where electives in Handwork, Foreign Language, Music, Art, Gardening and other subjects will be offered.

Grades and Credits

The Micha-el Institute wishes to point out that as an Anthroposophical Institution we view the term Certification in the light of Anthroposophy and the Threefold Social Order as indicated by Rudolf Steiner. In his picture of the social evolution of Human Beings three stages of development are pointed out. (e.g. GA 194 February 20, 1920) The first (prehistory) was the time of the Living God. In the second (historical times to nth Century) symbolism became heightened, church and state were divided, writing evolved and it was important to know by what authority things were done. We live in the third time when Culture, Rights and Economy have to be identified and work together. The most important question now is “Can you perform the task? Can you do the job?” not “By what authority do you do it?”

Consequently our certification shows that the teacher has completed a course satisfactorily. The course enables them to lay the foundation for their work in the classroom and school. The dwelling they build on this foundation depends upon their life and work experience and the person they are. To this end we will not be offering credits or grades. We are happy to give confidential references to schools and prospective employers.

“If we bear in mind that the young child is essentially an ensouled sense organ entirely given over in a bodily-religious way to what comes towards it from the surrounding world, we shall take care that up to the change of teeth everything within its vicinity is suitable to be received through the child’s senses, thereafter to be inwardly worked upon.  Above all we have to be aware that whenever a child perceives with its senses, at the same time, through its soul and spirit, it also absorbs the inherent moral element of what is perceived.”   Rudolf Steiner : Dornach, April 18, 1923
